Gray Code

Gray Code - Floating Point

Gray Code features Butch Rovan (clarinets + electronics), Kevin Patton (guitar + electronics), and Fred Kennedy (percussion). Gray Code’s unique style creates a sound that explores timbre, extended instrumental technique, and the ins and outs of groove. At the heart of Gray Code’s music is the extension of their instruments through wireless sensor systems that track performance gestures. Custom-built by Rovan and Patton, these modified instruments allow the real-time control of sound synthesis through physical movement. These new technologies—together with traditional acoustic instrumental techniques—allow the trio to create atmospheric worlds and unleash waves of patterns and rhythmic impulses that are both unrelenting and unpredictable.

Butch Rovan is a composer and performer on the faculty of the Department of Music at Brown University. Rovan has received prizes from the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition, the Berlin Transmediale International Media Arts Festival, and his work has been performed throughout Europe and the United States. Kevin Patton is a composer, guitarist, and experimental sound performer whose music explores intersections of composition and improvisation, technology and the body. As a solo artist, Patton has performed his own works of both instrumental improvisations and interactive chamber music throughout Europe, Japan, and North America. Drummer Fred Kennedy lives in New York City plays across a wide range of genres, from electro-acoustic to chamber music; and indie-rock to traditional and modern jazz. Fred can be heard regularly in such NYC clubs as the Blue Note, Rockwood Music Hall, Zebulon, the Knitting Factory, Tea Lounge, 55 Bar, and the Stone. Kennedy has also worked extensively collaborating with theatre, dance, and video artists.
